After nearly six years as Director General Australian Navy Cadets (DGANC), Commodore David Greaves, OAM, RAN is stepping down, leaving the organisation stronger, more modern and well placed for the future.

Serving as DGANC from 2019 to 2020 and again from 2021 to 2026, Commodore Greaves guided the Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) through a period of significant change and growth. His leadership helped shape a safer, more contemporary and youth-focused organisation, while maintaining a clear focus on providing meaningful opportunities for young Australians.

One of his most significant achievements was the introduction of the Cadet Youth Development Continuum in 2023. This modern training framework created a nationally consistent approach to cadet development, helping young people build practical skills, confidence and leadership experience that will benefit them well beyond their time in cadets.

In 2025, Commodore Greaves further strengthened the program through a national partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. By aligning ANC activities with the Award framework, cadets can now work towards recognised achievements while participating in the activities they already enjoy.

His tenure also saw important improvements to policy, governance and safety, ensuring the organisation remains a safe and supportive environment for cadets and volunteers alike. 

Under his leadership, the ANC experienced strong growth, with the establishment of a new Flotilla in South East Queensland, seven new units and four Training Ships. Cadet and staff numbers increased by around 20 per cent, reaching 2,803 cadets and 392 Officers of Cadets nationwide.

As the Australian Navy Cadets turns the page to its next chapter, the organisation welcomes Commodore John Stavridis, CSC, RAN, as the new Director General. Commodore Stavridis commenced his handover in Canberra on the 6th of July, bringing with him a wealth of leadership experience gained through command and senior appointments at HMAS Hobart, Training Forces, Navy Capability Division and HMAS Watson. An information technology and finance specialist, he offers a broad range of skills and experience that will support the continued development of the organisation.

The Australian Navy Cadets thanks Commodore Greaves for his outstanding service and dedication, and looks forward with confidence under Commodore Stavridis' leadership as the organisation continues to grow and create opportunities for young Australians.
